Armillaria mellea, Mushroom

  About Tim & Esther

Armillaria mellea is a plant pathogen and also an edible species of Honey fungus. It causes Armillaria root rot in many plant species. The fungus produces mushrooms around the bases of trees it has infected. As the fungus causing root rot to the tree, symptoms are also appeared in the crown as death and dieback of the branches. This species is capable of producing light via bioluminiscence.

Armillaria mellea is typically fruiting in large clusters, but sometimes singly on wood or buried wood of both hardwoods and conifers. It is considered good mushroom for many, and is collected when still in button stage. Cooking helps to break down the acrid or bitter taste of fresh specimens.
